Supporting energy independence, Pertamina develops vegetable resource technology

Jakarta – PT Refinery Pertamina Internasional (KPI) signed a collaboration with PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja, PT Rekayasa Industri, New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), and Lemigas at the Patra Graha Building, Cilacap, Central Java, Tuesday (16/8) in research and technology to develop biohydrocarbon diesel and bioavtur, or hydrocarbons produced from living organisms.

Pertamina’s President Director, Nicke Widyawati said in a written statement that this signing was Pertamina’s commitment to energy transition by developing bio resources that are widely spread in Indonesia.

“Energy sovereignty must be realised by utilising vegetable resources which must be the basis for future energy development. If that is realised, we can achieve independence as energy sovereignty,” said Widyawati.

President Director of PT KPI Taufik Adityawarman said, from the many potentials of new and renewable energy (NRE) in Indonesia, green energy is one of the business strategies that are in line with PT KPI. “The development of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) is a concrete step in improving HVO technology and its derivatives,” he said.

He said that he wishes Indonesia can become the leader of this demo plant. Adityawarman emphasised that KPI is ready to support not only providing land, but utilities, labour, and everything. “We are committed to implementing standards in managing the refinery for smooth operation of the demo plant, because this will be integrated by RU IV Cilacap,” he said.

New and renewable energy and energy conservation (EBTKE) Director of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Edi Wibowo added, to reach Indonesia’s energy mix target, emerging technologies and innovations and strategies to utilise plant-based plants should be developed.
