Jakarta – President Indonesia Prabowo Subianto on Thursday, March 20, inaugurated the Batang Integrated Industrial Special Economic Zone (SEZ Batang), which will become the home of major Chinese and US manufacturers.
“Today, Indonesia has an industrial area that we hope will become the ‘Shenzhen’ of Indonesia,” Prabowo said, as reported by Antara news agency, referring to an industrial zone in China.
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto said the development of the industrial area will bolster strategic industries and attract major global manufacturers, including from China and the US.
PT SEG Solar Manufacturing Indonesia, a leading solar photovoltaic (PV) company from the US, is among global players developing plants in Batang SEZ, Central Java. The company has just completed its plan construction and will begin operating in April this year.
SEG Solar started construction of its plant on Sept. 29, 2024, and is expected to become one of the largest PV producers in Southeast Asia. The plant’s production capacity is up to 5 GW of solar panels per year. The solar PVs produced by the plant will be mostly exported to the US market, and the remaining will be supplied to the domestic market.
Founder and COO of SEG Solar Manufacturing Indonesia, Jun Zhuge, said in a statement in early March that the company aims to contribute to the advancement of the renewable energy industry in Indonesia.
SEG Solar, an American Tier 1 solar panel manufacturing company, was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Houston, Texas, United States. The company has a global production capacity of 5.5 GW per year and manufacturing plants located in the US, China, Thailand, and, most recently, Indonesia.
Corporate Secretary of PT Kawasan Industri Terpadu Batang (Batang SEZ) said at least 18 companies will develop their plants in the industrial area. Apart from SEG Solar, the other companies developing their plants are Hoka and Converse, Yih Quan Footwear Indonesia, and many others. (Roffie Kurniawan)
