Jakarta – The increasing intensity of drought globally has been a real threat over the past 20 years. It is not a weather anomaly but a real threat of climate change due to global warming, according to President Joko Widodo. He said all countries also feel extreme drought.
“Be careful. Climate change has caused drought to occur everywhere. The earth’s temperature and weather are getting hotter, not only in Indonesia,” the President said in his speech at the LIKE Festival at the Indonesia Arena, GBK Area, Jakarta, Monday, 18 September.
The President said the food crisis is also a real threat due to global warming and has strengthened in recent decades. Food shortages in some countries, be it wheat or rice, caused some countries that used to export the foodstuff to no longer do so, driving rising rice prices.
On the same occasion, Jokowi mentioned the need to promote forest rehabilitation again because of the ongoing environmental damage. “I leave it to environmental activists, customary leaders, extension workers so that we intensify forest rehabilitation again. The government and the community should start planting trees when the rainy season comes,” he said. (Hartatik)
