KPI’s used cooking oil-based Avtur meets ICAO CORSIA, EU regulations

Jakarta – PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) has received an International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC) certificate to meet ICAO CORSIA and European Union standards in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) based on used cooking oil (UCO).

“This recognition proves that our technology and innovation at the Cilacap Refinery has met international requirements. This certification allows our SAF products to be traded globally,” Hermansyah Y Nasroen, Corporate Secretary of KPI, said in a statement on Thursday, January 9.

The Treated Distillate Hydro Treating (TDHT) unit at the Cilacap Refinery is the main location for producing used cooking oil-based SAF. Since 2022, this unit has produced vegetable biodiesel, known as Pertamina Renewable Diesel (RD) or HVO, which also holds an ISCC certificate. With this latest certification, the Cilacap Refinery is pioneering the production of SAF from UCO in Indonesia and the region.

“We have started a big step through Project USAF (UCO to SAF) in 2024. The Cilacap refinery is now ready to produce used cooking oil-based SAF in the first quarter of 2025,” Hermansyah explained.

Hermansyah also highlighted that using used cooking oil as a raw material for SAF can reduce carbon emissions by more than 90% compared to fossil fuels. “This is our real step to support the clean energy transition, as well as providing a positive impact to the community through the used cooking oil collection program,” he added.

Local technology for SAF production

To ensure production readiness, the Cilacap Refinery will soon replace a special catalyst designed to process used cooking oil into SAF. Hermansyah emphasised that this catalyst results from collaboration between Pertamina’s R&D technology and engineers at PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional, which is produced in domestic facilities.

“This catalyst symbolises the nation’s children’s mastery of advanced technology. This is proof that local technological capabilities can compete internationally,” said Hermansyah proudly.

Not only targeting the global market, KPI also seeks to support sustainability programs at the community level. The community’s collection of used cooking oil is an important part of SAF’s feedstock supply chain.

“By involving the community in feedstock collection, we are not only creating an environmentally friendly fuel but also empowering local communities,” said Hermansyah.

This success reinforces KPI’s position as a major player in the renewable energy industry, in line with Indonesia’s commitment to support global initiatives to reduce carbon emissions.

“With this innovation, we hope to make a significant contribution in meeting national and global sustainability targets,” Hermansyah concluded.

With the ISCC certification achieved, KPI’s used cooking oil-based SAF is ready to fill the international jet fuel market strengthening Indonesia’s move towards a greener and more sustainable energy transition. (Hartatik)
