Freeport purchases PLN RECs equivalent to 1,009 GWh to power its smelter

Jakarta – PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) purchased Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) from PT PLN (Persero) to meet the energy needs of Freeport’s smelter. This strategic step to support the energy transition in Indonesia was formalized with the signing of the Green Energy As Services REC Cooperation Agreement (PKS) in Surabaya.

PLN agreed to supply 1,009,000 REC units or the equivalent of 1,009 GWh of energy until 2025 to meet the energy needs of the Freeport refinery plant. PLN has started supplying power for PTFI’s smelter in Gresik Special Economic Zone (SEZ), East Java, since September 2023.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized that REC is a response to industry and business needs in supporting decarbonization efforts in Indonesia.

“PLN fully supports the needs of the business and industrial sectors passionate about the energy transition’s success in Indonesia. For this reason, this REC collaboration with Freeport further proves that our commitment is getting stronger in achieving zero emissions by 2060,” he said on PLN’s official website.

Horst-Dieter Garz, Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy of PT Freeport Indonesia, expressed his appreciation for the cooperation. “We are very pleased to be a long-term customer of PLN,” he said.

This cooperation is a strategic step in supporting the energy transition in Indonesia by mobilizing synergies between energy companies and industries to achieve the common goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. (Hartatik)
