PLN expanding EV charging stations to help decarbonise transport sector

Jakarta – State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) expanded the number of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to 3,233 units in 2024, surging 299% from the previous year of 1,081 units, indicating a growing demand for EVs in the country.

The move is also part of the company’s effort to help decarbonise the transport sector, which has become one of the largest contributors to high carbon emissions in the country.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) has said that around 11 million cars are on the road yearly in Indonesia, producing more than 35 million tons of CO2 emissions, while trucks send 50 million tons of CO2 emissions to the open air.

For these reasons, the government provides tax incentives to EV producers, both domestically produced EVs and imported ones.

PLN’s President Director Darmawan Prasodjo, said the company is committed to supporting the development of a stronger EV ecosystem in the country by developing supporting infrastructure, including EV charging stations. The move is part of the company’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and, at the same time, support the government’s drive to attain a net-zero emissions target in 2060.

Further, the company supports the development of home charging services (HCS), which have grown rapidly, surging 302% to 28,356 HCS units in 2024 from 9,393 units in 2023.

In addition to the increased number of EV charging stations, the electricity consumption of EVs surged 370% to 9.1 million kWh in 2024 from 2.4 million kWh in 2023. The electricity consumption of HC also increased sharply by 403% to 11.8 million kWh in 2024 from 2.9 million kWh in 2023.

At present, EV car sales account for 5-6% of the country’s total car sales. In 2024, total EV car sales reached 42,889 units, or 151.53% more than the previous year’s 17,062 units and 10,327 units in 2022. The EV car sales (excluding hybrid EVs) represented 4.69% of the national vehicle sales. (Roffie Kurniawan)
