Jakarta – The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) introduced a new logo for Indonesia’s emission reduction certification, known as SPEI (Sistem Pengurangan Emisi Indonesia), in a move to enhance its carbon exchange that launched in September 2023, Antara News Agency reported Monday, 29 January.
The logo, revealed in a grand launch in Jakarta, symbolises the concerted efforts of various sectors towards achieving Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) goals. The NDC is a national strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change.
Siti Nurbaya Bakar, the Minister of Environment and Forestry, emphasised the necessity of the SPEI scheme in domestic and international carbon trading. The scheme adheres to national and international standards to ensure credibility and effectiveness in emission reduction efforts.
A critical component of the SPEI system is establishing a Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) team and a methodology panel. These team’s tasks include ensuring the SPEI scheme’s transparency, accuracy, consistency, and environmental integrity. The MRV team’s primary role involves reviewing the validation and verification results from institutions accredited by the National Accreditation Committee. The methodology panel assists the MRV team in identifying and evaluating greenhouse gas emission calculation methodologies.
In support of this initiative, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has collaborated with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) to integrate the ministry’s climate change mitigation (PPI) national registration system and electricity emission reduction reporting system (APPLE GATRIK), aimed at optimising the governance of greenhouse gas emission data.
