Indonesia, Saudi Arabia build Saguling floating solar power plant, targeting 60 MW clean electricity production

Jakarta – Indonesia and Saudi Arabia are further strengthening cooperation in clean energy by starting the construction of a floating solar power plant in Saguling Reservoir, West Java. The project will have a capacity of 60 megawatts (MW) and become one of Indonesia’s largest floating solar power plant projects.

The first step in developing this project was the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) by PT PLN (Persero) President Director Darmawan Prasodjo and PT Indo ACWA Tenaga Saguling President Director Rudolf Rinaldo Aritonang. This collaboration aims to accelerate the clean energy transition and support achieving the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060.

“The construction of the Saguling Floating Solar Power Plant is part of PLN Indonesia Power’s efforts to accelerate the energy transition and support the Government’s target of achieving Net Zero Emission by 2060 by continuing to develop renewable energy-based plants,” said PLN Indonesia Power President Director Edwin Nugraha Putra in his official statement uploaded on the @plnindonesiapower Instagram account, Wednesday, August 21.

The Saguling Floating Solar Power Plant will be built on 95 hectares in the Saguling Reservoir. The project is projected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 120,000 tons annually, contributing significantly to Indonesia’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

The plant will be operated by PT Indo ACWA Power Saguling, a joint venture between ACWA Power of Saudi Arabia, which owns a 49% stake, and PLN Indonesia Power of Indonesia, which owns a 51% stake. This collaboration demonstrates both countries’ commitment to expand renewable energy use in Indonesia.

With its great potential, the Saguling floating solar power plant is expected to become a model for developing similar projects, increasing Indonesia’s renewable energy capacity and strengthening bilateral relations with partner countries in the clean energy sector. (Hartatik)
