Indonesia needs USD 235 billion investment to fund green projects until 2040

Jakarta – State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) projected that Indonesia will require an investment of up to USD 235 billion to fund various renewable energy-related projects until 2040, the state-owned company said on February 16. Therefore, all related parties must collaborate to fulfil this investment need.

As stated in the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN), the government targets the national power generation capacity to reach 443 gigawatts (GW) by 2060. Of this, 79% will be sourced from new renewable energy (NRE), including 42% from variable renewable energy (VRE) sources such as solar and wind power

President Director of PLN Darmawan Prasodjo said the efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency require collaboration in the innovation and sustainable investment sectors, especially for clean energy projects. The projects include the development of renewable energy-based power generation and an integrated national power grid system.

“We need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the future of our next generation. The main challenge is providing affordable, safe, and clean energy while accelerating economic growth,” said Darmawan.

Darmawan said that Indonesia, as an archipelagic country, faces challenges in utilising renewable energy sources that are spread out across the country. To address the mismatch between the location of renewable energy sources and energy demand, PLN has planned to build a transmission network of more than 63,000 km long by 2040.

“Without this transmission network, we cannot utilise our renewable energy potential. There is no transition without transmission,” he said.

“To attain this target, we need to create an environment conducive to investment by ensuring that these projects are bankable, feasible, and have well-managed risks,” he said.
