Government aims to triple renewable energy share in energy mix to 35% in 2034

Jakarta—The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) said the government has set a target to triple the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix to 35% in 2034 from 12% at present. This shows the government’s ambitious plan to accelerate renewable energy development.

The government set a target to raise the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix to 23% in 2025. However, it has missed the target. The MEMR’s Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) conveyed the above target in the presentation material to the industry players dated March 11, 2025.

The above target is set in the latest National Electricity General Plan, known as RUPTL, for 2024-2034. The RUPTL was updated based on the government’s National Electricity General Plan (RUEN) for 2024-2060.

The RUPTL shows a more detailed government plan to develop power generation during this period, which business players also use as a reference to invest in power generation.

During the period 2024-2034, the government aims to add 71 GW of renewable energy-based power generation, the MEMR said.

In line with this plan, the government plans to develop the so-called green enabling super grid, spreading in the islands of Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and the Nusa Tenggara region.

The development of green enabling super grid also aims to prevent mismatch between the supply and demand of electricity.

In implementing the RUPTL 2025-2034, PLN will actively collaborate with investors, in this case the Independent Power Producer (IPP), as stated in the latest Ministerial Decree Number 5, 2025.

The new ministerial decree also regulates the sale and purchase agreement (PJBL) of renewable energy, the use of excess energy, deemed dispatch, the application of NRE Intermittent and the utilisation of a battery energy storage system (BESS).

PLN has said that it is ready to adjust its programs and plans with the new regulation, which pays a special focus on the development of renewable energy. (Roffie Kurniawan)
