Geothermal power developers allowed to process permit through online system

Jakarta—The Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) said it has applied the so-called Online Single Submission (OSS) System, which will allow geothermal power plant developers to process permits, known as Geothermal Permit (IPB), to speed up the country’s geothermal power plant development.

To kick off the OSS system for geothermal energy permits, the EBTKE office has issued Geothermal Permits for the Cisolok Cisukarame Geothermal Working Area (WKP) and WKP Nage, the EBTKE office said in a statement on Thursday, 27 February.

The issuance of the IPB for the two WKPs through OSS is a concrete manifestation of the government’s efforts to accelerate the licensing process and provide convenience for geothermal investors.

Director General of EBTKE, Eniya Listiyani Dewi, said that the issuance of this OSS system is the result of synergy and collaboration between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources through the online licensing application system and the Investment Coordinating Board.

By simplifying licensing procedures, the time required to obtain a permit is much shorter without sacrificing substance and quality.

“With the implementation of the OSS system, the administrative process becomes more transparent, faster, and more efficient. This is certainly expected to encourage more investment in developing geothermal energy in Indonesia,” she said.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) data, Indonesia has huge geothermal power potential resources of 23.7 gigawatts, located in around 300 areas, spreading in Sumatra, Java, Bali, Sulawesi, and the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province. However, so far, only 2.6 GW of the country’s power generation comes from geothermal energy source.

The acceleration of geothermal power generation development is part of the government’s efforts to attain the net-zero emissions target in 2060. (rk)
