Garuda Indonesia, Pertamina successfully test bioavtur

Jakarta – Garuda Indonesia and PT Pertamina (Persero) have successfully conducted the first test flight using environmentally friendly fuel for commercial aircraft or Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) after previously passing the static test stage.

The first flight test occurred on Wednesday, 4 October, at Garuda Maintenance Facility AeroAsia, Soekarno Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten. The SAF was tested through ground and flight tests on a Boeing 737-800 NG commercial aircraft with registration number PK-GFX, part of Garuda Indonesia.

For one hour, the aircraft did a test flight over Pelabuhan Ratu airspace before finally landing back at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

The research team from PT LAPI ITB said positive results of this first flight test mean that Indonesia is ready to move on to the next stage: the planned use of SAF in Garuda Indonesia’s commercial flights.

Garuda Indonesia’s President Director, Irfan Setiaputra, stated that the successful trial of SAF type Bioavtur J2.4 “will support Indonesia’s efforts to achieve the zero-emission target, which is expected to be achieved by 2060.” He said that after passing all the SAF trials, the next step is implementing SAF in Indonesia’s commercial flight operations.

Pertamina President Director Nicke Widyawati said that Pertamina continues to develop green fuels, including the production of SAF for the Indonesian aviation industry, which will be marketed through PT Pertamina Patra Niaga. SAF is produced through the ester and fatty acid (HEFA) co-processing method at the Green Refinery facility of PT Pertamina International Refinery, Cilacap Refinery.

The successful SAF trial is the result of collaboration between Garuda Indonesia and Pertamina along with various parties, including the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Transportation, ITB, APROBI, BPDPKS, LEMIGAS, BRIN, as well as Pertamina and Garuda Indonesia subsidiaries.
