Jakarta – One of the global mining and downstream companies, Eramet, affirmed its seriousness in supporting the battery industry ecosystem in Indonesia, according to a company statement on Wednesday, 5 March. This commitment was made during a meeting between Eramet’s CEO, Christel Bories, and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto at the Indonesian Embassy in Paris on 3 March 2025.

During the meeting, Eramet’s CEO expressed his company’s interest in expanding investment in Indonesia, particularly in developing an environmentally friendly EV battery industry. Bories highlighted the need for certainty regarding the investment roadmap and achievable production capacity to ensure the project’s sustainability in Indonesia.

“We want to understand more about the availability of raw materials and the production capacity that can be supported in Indonesia. This is important for Eramet in developing a long-term investment strategy,” said Bories.

Airlangga welcomed Eramet’s interest, given the strategic role of the EV battery industry in accelerating the national energy transition. He affirmed that Indonesia can provide the necessary support to realise this investment.

“The Indonesian government encourages the development of a green energy-based EV battery industry. We also ensure that this project will be located close to hydro energy sources to make it more sustainable,” said Airlangga.

Both parties also discussed concrete steps to accelerate investment realisation during the discussion. Airlangga and Bories agreed on the need for a clear roadmap, including an estimation of achievable production capacity, to facilitate decision-making by the Indonesian Government in providing support to Eramet.

In addition to discussing EV battery investment, Eramet expressed interest in partnering with the Daya Anagata Nusantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) in critical mineral downstream projects. Eramet sees Indonesia as a strategic partner in developing sustainable natural resource-based industries.

On the other hand, Eramet also expressed his support for accelerating the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EUCEPA) negotiations with the European Commission. This agreement is expected to strengthen trade and investment relations between Indonesia and the European Union, especially with France.

“The collaboration between Indonesia and Eramet has great potential in encouraging innovation and strengthening the supply chain of the global nickel and electric vehicle battery industries. We believe this will provide long-term benefits for both parties,” Mr Airlangga said.

Also attending the meeting were Secretary to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso, Indonesian Ambassador to France Mohamad Oemar, Deputy for Economic Cooperation and Investment Edi Prio Pambudi, and Assistant Deputy for Multilateral Economic Cooperation Ferry Ardiyanto.
