Chevron and Pertamina, cooperate to develop CCS/CCUS in East Kalimantan

Jakarta – PT Pertamina (Persero) and Chevron New Energies International Pte. Ltd. (Chevron New Energies) signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) to study the feasibility of carbon capture storage and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCS/CCUS) in East Kalimantan (Kaltim).

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of CERAWeek 2023, a conference hosted by S&P Global, mid-March. In this five-day event, leaders of global oil companies together with government officials, experts, academics, technology innovators, and financial leaders explore ideas and solutions in one of the plenary discussions with the theme “Navigating a Turbulent World: Energy, climate and security. ”

Present at the signing of the JSA were Pertamina’s SVP Research and Technology, Oki Muraza, and Chris Powers, VP CCUS for Chevron New Energies. The signing was witnessed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Arifin Tasrif and Head of SKK Migas, Dwi Soetjipto.

Chris Powers, CCUS Vice President for Chevron New Energies said, “This collaboration is the second agreement between Chevron and Pertamina following the collaboration announced in Washington, DC in May 2022 to explore potential low-carbon business opportunities in Indonesia. The first agreement, announced at the B20 event in Bali in November 2022 between Chevron New Energies, Pertamina Power Indonesia and Keppel Infrastructure, aims to explore the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia projects using renewable energy in Indonesia.

Minister Tasrif said that the government fully supports this partnership.”CCS/CCUS is a very important initiative for the government’s agenda in the decarbonization program. This partnership will contribute to creating a strong foundation for achieving Indonesia’s energy transition goals,” he said.

The government has completed the harmonisation of CCS/CCUS regulations which is expected to encourage the development of more CCS/CCUS projects throughout Indonesia. (Hartatik)
