Additional gas production from ONWJ block is ready to support national energy needs

Jakarta—Additional gas production from the Offshore North West Java (ONWJ) Block is expected to start operating in 2026. Two major projects, the OO OX field project and the OP-LES project, are currently under completion. These two projects are projected to provide additional gas production of 38 million cubic feet per day (mmscfd), which will strengthen the national energy supply, especially in the western Java region.

PHE ONWJ General Manager Muzwir Wiratama stated that the ONWJ Block is one of the most active oil and gas blocks in Indonesia. Various work programs are being implemented, including replacing old pipelines and developing new fields, to maintain and increase oil and gas production.

“The OP-LES project, planned for completion by the end of 2025, is expected to increase gas production by 15 mmscfd. We are currently reactivating three wells and adding two new wells, all of which will use old platforms that have been repaired,” Muzwir said in an official statement on Monday, August 19.

Furthermore, Muzwir explained that the OO OX project, scheduled for completion in early 2026, will increase oil production by 3,000 barrels per day and gas by 22 MMscfd. This additional gas production will help overcome the gas shortage in the western part of Java, which has been a major challenge for industries in the area.

“Hopefully, gas from the LES and OO OX fields can be used by industries, fertilizer factories, and PLN in western Java. The additional 37 mmscfd of gas will be significant for these sectors,” Muzwir added.

Oil production in the ONWJ Block is projected to reach 26 thousand barrels per day (BPH) by the end of 2024, with current production hovering around 25 thousand BPH. Muzwir is optimistic that the year-end target can be achieved, especially with various ongoing work programs, including replacing pipes to ensure operational stability.

“By the end of the year, we are targeting production to reach 26,000 BPH. Replacement of pipes is being carried out to ensure stable operations,” Muzwir explained.

The ONWJ block is one of Indonesia’s major contributors to oil production, ranking among the top 10 national oil producers. On the same occasion, a farewell was given to the FSO (Floating Storage and Offloading) Arco Ardjuna, Pertamina’s legendary oil storage facility that has operated for 52 years. This FSO has stored and processed 1.28 billion barrels of oil, with 4,350 lifting processes during its operation. (Hartatik)
