Jakarta – PT Multi Bintang Indonesia Tbk (MBI), part of the Heineken Company, announced that it is using up to 99 per cent renewable energy across all of its production facilities. This achievement has been verified by a third party, making MBI one of the most aggressive manufacturing companies in Indonesia in terms of decarbonisation performance.
MBI President Director Roland Bala said on Monday, 24 November, that this achievement not only demonstrates the company’s commitment, but also the transparency of the process. “This achievement is a true reflection of our commitment to sustainability. By achieving 99 per cent renewable energy in all production facilities, we are making a significant contribution to the energy transition in Indonesia,” he said.
He added that his party would continue to invest and innovate to decarbonise our production processes by 2030.
In achieving this target, MBI combines various renewable energy sources, ranging from the construction of biomass facilities and the installation of solar panels to the use of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) issued by PT PLN (Persero). Since 2022, this initiative has reduced scope 1 and 2 emissions by 97 per cent and CO₂ emissions by more than 16 kilotonnes.
Collaboration with PLN is one of the key pillars of this achievement, particularly through the provision of RECs, which ensure that the company’s electricity consumption comes from green sources.
General Manager of PLN Jakarta Raya, Andy Adchaminoerdin, expressed his appreciation. “This collaboration is a concrete example of synergy between state-owned enterprises and the private sector in accelerating the achievement of the national Net Zero Emissions target,” he said.
Outside of PLN, MBI has also partnered with other renewable energy companies, including BECIS, which builds and operates two biomass facilities that supply energy directly to MBI’s production sites. Roland emphasised that cross-sector cooperation has had a tangible impact on accelerating the adoption of clean energy.
Furthermore, MBI is not stopping at achieving 99 per cent renewable energy. The company is implementing an Energy Consumption Reduction Roadmap, which focuses on improving energy efficiency through smart control technology and production process optimisation. Measures such as improving cooling system efficiency, reducing energy use in pasteurisation, and enhancing aeration in wastewater treatment facilities are being implemented to accelerate decarbonisation.
