Indonesia urges concrete climate action ahead of COP31

Jakarta – Indonesia has called for stronger international cooperation to turn global climate commitments into concrete action as countries prepare for the UN climate conference, COP31, in Türkiye next month, the ministry of environment said on Thursday, October 8.

Environment Minister Moh. Jumhur Hidayat represented Indonesia at the Pre-COP31 Leaders’ Event in Nadi, Fiji, on Tuesday. October 6, where representatives from more than 50 countries gathered to discuss climate priorities ahead of the November conference in Antalya, Türkiye.

“The challenge facing the world today is no longer simply to increase ambition, but to ensure that this ambition is translated into concrete implementation on the ground,” Jumhur said.

He stressed that climate action must follow the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities, which recognise countries’ differing capacities and responsibilities in addressing climate change.

The forum adopted the Taku Pakasoa Declaration, expressing international support for small island developing states and least developed countries to strengthen emissions reduction efforts, address climate impacts and build resilience to loss and damage. Pacific island nations, including Tuvalu, face growing threats from rising sea levels.

Indonesia also outlined its climate commitments under its nationally determined contribution (NDC), targeting net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier. The government said its climate transition must remain aligned with economic growth, poverty reduction and protection for vulnerable communities.

Jumhur highlighted several priorities, including the FOLU Net Sink 2030 programme, reducing emissions from waste and methane, and decarbonising existing industries while developing new low-carbon industries.

He also said Indonesia’s energy transition must be just and orderly, maintaining energy security and affordability and protecting vulnerable groups.

The Pre-COP31 meetings in Fiji and Tuvalu ran from October 5 to 9, bringing together government leaders and international organisations to build consensus ahead of COP31, scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye. (nsh)
