MedcoEnergi installs 1,500 solar panels in Corridor Block, reducing emissions by 934 tonnes of CO₂e per annum

Jakarta – PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk (MedcoEnergi), through its subsidiary Medco E&P Grissik Ltd., operates 1,500 solar panels in the Corridor Block working area, South Sumatra. According to MedcoEnergi in its statement on Monday, September 8, this project is projected to reduce emissions by up to 934 tons of CO₂e per year.

“For us, sustainability is not a short-term project. It is a long-term commitment to future generations,” said Ronald Gunawan, Director & Chief Operating Officer of MedcoEnergi.

The solar panels installed in the Suban, Grissik, Dayung, and Sumpal areas have an installed capacity of 885 kWp. From this capacity, the company estimates that the clean electricity supply will reach 1,124 MWh per year.

The use of solar energy not only reduces emissions but also saves natural gas as a fuel for power plants. Approximately 18 MMscf of gas per year can be saved, equivalent to the emissions of cars travelling 5.5 million kilometres.

Renewable energy and upstream oil and gas go hand in hand

Ronald said that the presence of rooftop solar power plants in the Corridor Block shows that renewable energy can synergise with upstream oil and gas operations. “This is not just a technological installation. It is clear evidence that operational efficiency and carbon footprint reduction can go hand in hand,” he said.

MedcoEnergi emphasised that this solar panel project is part of the company’s long-term strategy to support the Indonesian government’s Net-Zero Emission target.

In addition to solar power, the company is also developing other low-carbon energy initiatives, ranging from geothermal to various greenhouse gas emission reduction programs across its entire operating area.

“We want to strengthen our role as a nationally reliable energy company that is operationally sound and responsible for the future of the environment,” said Ronald. (Hartatik)
