
JAKARTA – PT Medco Ratch Power Riau, a subsidiary of PT Medco Power Indonesia, has started the commercial operation of the Riau Combined Cycle Power Plant (Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Gas Uap, PLTGU) with a capacity of 276 MegaWatts (MW), said Medco Group (MEDC) in a statement Tuesday (15/2). This joint project with RATCH Group Public Company Limited with a total investment of USD290 million is part of the National Strategic Project which is connected to the Sumatra electricity grid.
“This project will strengthen electricity security and reduce the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in the provinces of Riau and central Sumatra,” said President Director of Medco Power, Eka Satria in the release.
The company claimed that the Riau Power Plant adopts a highly efficient combined cycle gas generator and meets international standards for environmental quality management. The funding of the power plant is supported by a number of international financial institutions cooperate with sponsors, such as the Asian Development Bank, International Finance Corporation, MUFG Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.
“The Riau PLTGU is committed to developing our gas to power business portfolio, as well as supporting the government in social and economic development programs,” said Satria.
Furthermore, the Riau Power Plant has recorded 8.6 million safe man hours. Meanwhile, CEO of MedcoEnergi, Roberto Lorato said, the power plant is part of a strategy to develop a low carbon portfolio and achieve Net Zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2050, and Scope 3 by 2060, supporting the government’s energy transition program.
“I am pleased that the Riau PLTGU has safely achieved commercial operations and overcome the challenges of Covid-19,” he said.
Medco Power was established in 2004 as an independent power generation producer under the MedcoEnergi business group. Medco Power is engaged in the IPP and O&M sector, with a focus on clean and renewable energy. In addition to the Riau PLTGU, Medco Power is currently developing the Ijen PLTP (geothermal power plant) project with an estimated capacity of 110 MW and the Sumbawa PLTS project with 26 MWp.
