2023 GDP boosted by Rp2,198 trillion by mineral and coal sector

Jakarta—The mineral and coal sector significantly contributed to the Indonesian economy in 2023, contributing Rp2,198 trillion, or 10.5 per cent of the total national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Rp20,892 trillion. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) revealed this data at the Minerba Expo 2024 event.

The Director General of Mineral and Coal, Tri Winarno, assessed in a written statement on Tuesday, November 26, that this figure shows the strategic role of the mineral and coal sector as the driving force of the national economy.

Tri explained that the large contribution of the mineral and coal sector is in line with the government’s efforts to implement the natural resource downstream program. This program aims to increase the added value of mining products before they are exported, thus having a greater impact on the national economy.

He added that the government targets economic growth to reach 8 per cent during the 2025-2029 period, which will be largely supported by the strengthening of the mineral and coal sector. Tri said that mineral and coal resources are non-renewable assets, so their management must be done wisely.

Amid the global spotlight on environmental issues, Tri also emphasised the importance of balancing the exploitation of natural resources with environmental preservation.

“We must ensure that the mineral and coal sector not only focuses on profit but also prioritises people and planet according to the principles of sustainable development,” he added. (Hartatik)
