Jakarta—United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Retno L.P. Marsudi of Indonesia as his Special Envoy on Water, effective November 1, 2024, the UN office said in a statement Friday, September 13. The appointment aims to advance global efforts on water security, building on the outcomes of the 2023 UN Water Conference and leading into the 2026 Water Conference.
Marsudi, who will complete her tenure as Indonesia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs in October 2024, brings nearly 40 years of diplomatic experience to her new role. She will promote stronger political, economic, and social cooperation on water issues, ensuring progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6 (clean water and sanitation for all).
Her work will include enhancing international collaboration on water processes, mobilizing action, and advocating for the global water agenda. Marsudi will also represent the UN Secretary-General in global water discussions and work closely with UN-WATER to implement the UN’s water and sanitation strategy.
Marsudi’s distinguished career includes leading the 10th World Water Forum in Bali in 2024, co-chairing the COVAX AMC during the COVID-19 pandemic, and representing Indonesia in various international forums, including as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Her appointment underscores the UN’s commitment to addressing the global water crisis through innovative partnerships and international cooperation. (nsh)
