Jakarta – SunCable, an Australian renewable energy company, will build a Renewable Energy Technology Research Park at Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji (UMRAH), Riau Islands. SunCable’s major investment plan in Indonesia is part of the Australia-Asia PowerLink (AAPowerLink), according to UMRAH Vice Chancellor Agung Dhamar Syakti in an official statement on Tuesday, October 1.
“This is a significant investment from SunCable and a historic moment for our university,” said Agung, who welcomed the initiative and called it a milestone for the university and Indonesia.
“The construction of this research centre allows us to develop practical knowledge and student research on renewable energy, which is one of the most important sectors in the world today. This investment will empower the local workforce, put us at the forefront of the energy transition, and become the epicentre of renewable energy development in Riau Islands,” he added.
The research centre will function as a venue for training, workshops, seminars, and innovative research projects in renewable energy. The AAPowerLink project will utilize the latest High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology to transmit renewable energy from Australia’s Northern Territory (NT) to Darwin and Singapore, passing through Indonesia. The undersea transmission system to be built in Indonesian waters will be one of the largest in the world.
The AAPowerLink project will locate most of its assets in Indonesia, with an investment of USD 24 billion. SunCable, founded in 2018, is a renewable energy company that focuses on renewable energy engineering, energy storage, power system engineering, logistics, supply chain management, and regulation.
“This cooperation is a strategic move that will bring long-term benefits to both parties. We hope to see the positive impact of this investment soon,” Agung Dhamar Syakti concluded. (Hartatik)
