SKK Migas discovers gas reserves on Seram Island

Jakarta – Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) and their contractor Citic Seram Energy Ltd confirmed that there are gas reserves in the Seram Non-Bula Working Area (WK), Seti Village, North Seram District, East Seti District, Central Maluku Regency, Maluku Province. According to SKK Migas, the potential for oil reserves on Seram Island, Maluku, can reach 5 billion barrels.

“From the retest, the Lofin-2 (re-entry) well is flowing gas of 15.02 million cubic feet of gas per day or MMSCFD at a choke opening of 64/64 inches,” SKK Migas Head of Drilling Division, Surya Widyantoro said in a written statement, this week.

He said that the process was intended to test and evaluate the potential for hydrocarbons in the carbonate rocks of the Manusela formation, as well as determine the character or behaviour of the reservoir. Thus, this activity plays an important role in the future development of the Lofin structure. Currently, the SKK Migas and Citic Seram Energy teams are still working and are at the location to monitor and test the strength of the hydrocarbon bursts.

“Flaring during well testing has been carried out and the gas burst is quite good,” Widyantoro said, explaining the controlled burning process of the excess gas produced.

He said, the discovery of gas on Seram Island poses considerable challenges in the operational testing of exploratory wells because they are located in a remote area, so it takes quite a long time. Especially for mobilising drilling equipment and materials, wells with relatively deep depths and high reservoir pressure. (Hartatik)
