Jakarta – PT PLN (Persero) shows its commitment to supporting renewable energy by supplying 1,730 kVA of electricity to the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP). This step was taken to support the commissioning test of the plant, as part of the preparation before its full operation.
The commissioning test is an important stage that must be passed to ensure the plant can operate properly and safely before finally supplying electricity to the main grid. PLN said the Ijen PLTP is planned to be fully operational by the end of 2024. Previously, PLN has supported the construction of the Ijen PLTP with an electricity supply of 197 kVA.
PLTP Ijen, located in East Java, will have a capacity of 34 MW and is expected to meet the energy needs of the Java Madura Bali (Jamali) Electricity System. This is the first geothermal plant in East Java and is part of the effort to achieve the renewable energy mix target of 23 per cent by 2025.
“Renewable energy development is a solution to achieve the renewable energy mix target. One of them is through geothermal, which can boost national electricity supply because of its long-lasting energy production,” said Agus Kuswardoyo, General Manager of PLN East Java Distribution Unit (UID) in an official statement, on Tuesday, July 23.
Agus explained that the supply of green power plants in East Java is currently dominated by hydropower plants, which account for 46.24 per cent of the total green energy. Solar Power Plants (PLTS) and Waste Power Plants (PLTSa) contributed 14.40 per cent, while Steam Gas Power Plants (PLTGU) contributed 6.59 per cent.
“Hydropower is still the biggest contributor to green energy in East Java. For islands in East Java, especially in the Madura region, we have electrified 39 out of a total of 43 inhabited islands,” Agus added.
In the Electricity Business Plan (RUPTL), East Java has a geothermal development potential of 362 MWe (Mega Watt electricity) spread across 12 locations, including Melati Pacitan, Rejosari Pacitan, Telaga Ngebel Ponorogo, Mount Pandan Madiun, Mount Arjuno – Welirang, Cangar, Songgoriti, Tirtosari Sumenep, Argopuro Probolinggo, Tiris – Mount Lamongan Probolinggo, Mount Wilis, and Blawan – Ijen Bondowoso.
