PLN renewable energy certificate users increase 117% in 2024

Jakarta – State electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) said the company’s Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) has drawn industry players’ interest, as reflected in the increasing demand for and users of the certificate.

PLN said in a statement on Monday, January 27, that the total number of business entities that have secured REC from PLN will have a combined electricity usage of 5.38 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2024, representing an increase of 117% from the previous year’s 3.54 TWh. The demand mostly came from the industrial sector.

Each REC certificate proves that the customers’ electricity usage per megawatt-hour (MWh) comes from renewable or non-fossil fuel power plants.

REC makes it easier for PLN customers to be recognised for their transparent, accountable, and internationally recognised renewable energy consumption.

From its inception in 2020 until the end of 2024, the total combined electricity consumption of PLN REC users was 10.99 TWh.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said REC is a solution for the industrial and business sectors to obtain reliable and affordable green electricity. The demand for products produced through clean energy has become an important factor in maintaining industrial competitiveness.

“As the backbone of the national EBT (renewable energy) provider, PLN is committed to increasing industrial competitiveness by providing green electricity services 100% supplied by our renewable energy-based power generators. We are ready to serve the needs of green electricity for the business and industrial sectors with an easy and fast process,” said Darmawan.

He said companies that have purchased RECs are, among others, shoemaker Nike, PT Cheil Jedang Indonesia, PT Asahimas Chemical, PT Agincourt Resources, PT Indah Klat Pulp & Paper Tbk, PT Air Liquide Indonesia, PT South Pacific Viscose, PT Sorini Agro Asia Corporindo, PT Smelting, and PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia.

He said so far, eight power plants of PLN have provided green energy, namely geothermal power plants (PLTP) Kamojang, PLTP Ulubelu, PLTP Lahendong, PLTP Ulumbu, hydropower plant (PLTA) Cirata, PLTA Bakaru, PLTA Orya Genyem, and mini hydropower plant (PLTM) Lambur.

PLN’s REC uses an electronic tracking system provided by APX TIGRs, a company based in California, USA. The REC certificate system ensures that once the certificate is issued, it cannot be bought or sold to other parties. The entire process has also been verified to meet international standards.
