Jakarta – PT PLN (Persero) and Masdar, a renewable energy company from the United Arab Emirates, are exploring the potential of developing a floating solar power plant in Jatigede Reservoir. PLN, in a statement on Monday, 14 April, believes that the Jatigede solar power plant can open new investment opportunities in Indonesia’s green energy sector.
In the MoU signed in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, 8 April, coinciding with the state visit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, the development project in Jatigede was highlighted as one of the strategic steps to increase sustainable electricity supply. The scope of the agreement also emphasises strengthening the technology and infrastructure of floating solar power plants, in line with national energy transition efforts.
Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PT PLN (Persero), emphasised that the project is part of the company’s commitment to leading the country’s energy transition.
“PLN is fully committed to leading the energy transition in Indonesia. This collaboration with Masdar is tangible evidence of our joint efforts to tackle the global climate crisis. By increasing renewable energy capacity, we are reducing dependence on fossil fuels and strengthening energy sovereignty and driving national economic growth,” he said.
On the same occasion, Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, expressed his appreciation for the strategic cooperation.
“This agreement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to supporting Indonesia’s ambitious renewable energy targets. We look forward to continuing to build on our already strong partnership with PLN to explore the development of renewable energy projects that drive sustainable growth in Indonesia,” Mr Jameel said.
Meanwhile, PGN has been preparing for the expansion of its floating solar power plant project at Cirata Reservoir. This plant has been operating since November 2023 with a capacity of 192 MWp, supplying electricity to around 50,000 households and reducing carbon emissions by 214,000 tonnes per year. The agreement to explore the potential of Jatigede Reservoir is seen as an additional opportunity for Masdar to expand its renewable energy investment portfolio in Indonesia.
With this collaboration, both parties hope to increase investment in the renewable energy sector, make a tangible contribution to reducing carbon emissions, and support the sustainability of electricity supply in Indonesia. The Jatigede project is expected to be a catalyst for developing green energy infrastructure, while supporting the national energy transition target towards more environmentally friendly development.
