PLN establishes strategic cooperation with Japanese company JERA

Jakarta – PT PLN (Persero) has partnered with a Japanese company, JERA Co. Inc., to explore opportunities for strategic cooperation to develop a more efficient and environmentally friendly energy supply chain.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said the partnership aims to strengthen collaboration with world-leading energy companies, especially in primary energy management. Darmawan emphasised that the transformation of PLN Energi Primer Indonesia Subholding (PLN EPI) into a world-class primary energy company is related to LNG and alternative green energy, such as hydrogen, considered the future energy.

“This cooperation not only focuses on aspects of procurement and supply optimisation but also midstream LNG development and utilisation of human resources to support LNG commercial and market development,” he said in a written statement.

In addition, the main focus is also on developing sustainable solutions such as green and blue hydrogen to deal with the energy transition. PLN EPI, under the leadership of President Director Iwan Agung Firstantara, sees gas as an essential substitute for fuel/diesel and coal in the short and medium term.

Meanwhile, gas/LNG is considered necessary to complement renewable energy development in the long term. PLN EPI hopes to optimise the LNG supply chain, infrastructure, human resources, and green energy technology within the PLN Group through this cooperation.

Shinsuke Nakayama, Executive Officer and Head of JERA’s Platform Business Group, expressed his belief that developing the LNG supply chain will maximally support PLN’s energy supply. He sees this initiative as essential to decarbonisation efforts in line with the global energy transition.

The joint commitment between PLN and JERA is essential in addressing future energy challenges. By working together, they hope to develop innovative solutions that support the transition to clean and sustainable energy in Indonesia. (Hartatik)
