PGEO and Pema explore geothermal potential in Aceh Besar

Jakarta – Renewable energy company PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGEO), together with PT Pembangunan Aceh (Pema) are ready to conduct geothermal drilling in the Seulawah Agam Geothermal Working Area (WKP), Aceh Besar. This strategic step is expected to pave the way for establishing Aceh’s first geothermal power plant.

“We believe this project will not only provide benefits in terms of energy but also create a positive impact on the surrounding community through employment opportunities and improving the local economy,” said Pertamina Geothermal Energy Director of Exploration and Development Edwil Suzandi in a statement on Monday, December 16.

Edwil explained that WKP Seulawah Agam has a geothermal energy potential of up to 320 MW based on an initial geoscience survey.

Pertamina Geothermal and Pema have previously completed various preliminary stages for project development, including geoscience surveys in 2017-2019, geohazard mapping in 2020-2021, and conceptual model updates in 2022-2024.

“This provides a strong technical basis to proceed to the exploration drilling stage in three locations,” Edwil said. He added that the Seulawah Agam geothermal project is one of PGEO’s priorities in supporting government policies to utilise renewable energy.

In addition, this project aligns with Pertamina Geothermal’s mission, which is to contribute to achieving the net zero emission target while encouraging national energy self-sufficiency. (hs)
