Jakarta – PT Pertamina (Persero) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to explore collaboration in accelerating Indonesia’s energy transition. The signing took place during the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting 2024 in Jakarta, Thursday, August 22.
Pertamina’s Finance Director, Emma Sri Martini, emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and increasing renewable energy capacity. According to Emma, this cooperation with JICA is a strategic step to encourage the acceleration of energy transition through innovation and collaboration in various key areas.
“We are exploring potential cooperation in various aspects, such as funding for transition and renewable energy projects, innovative research support, and human resource development through training. In addition, this cooperation also includes developing energy technologies relevant to Indonesia’s needs,” Emma said.
Pertamina has launched two main strategies to achieve its Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060: decarbonisation and low-carbon business initiatives. Emma emphasized the importance of support from global partners such as JICA to accelerate capability development and technology transfer needed to achieve these goals.
Meanwhile, JICA’s Chief Representative, Takeda Sachiko, welcomed the cooperation and emphasized that JICA is committed to supporting the energy transition in the Asian region, especially in Indonesia.
“We are very pleased to be able to work with Pertamina, which has an important role in efforts to achieve decarbonization targets in Indonesia,” Takeda said.
The collaboration between Pertamina and JICA is expected to contribute significantly to achieving Indonesia’s NZE target by 2060. This cooperation is also projected to open up opportunities for other joint initiatives that will accelerate the transition towards renewable energy and improve the overall efficiency of energy projects.
