Pertamina invests 14% of total capex for renewables

JAKARTA – PT Pertamina (Persero) said Friday (18/3) that the company is committed to increase its new and renewable energy mix (NRE) by 17 percent by 2030. In line with this commitment, Pertamina included a capital expenditure plan for investment in the sector in the 2022-2026 period to reach 11 billion USD. This portion reached 14% of Pertamina’s total capital expenditure (capex) in the same period.

Pertamina’s largest capex in 2022-2026 will still come from the upstream sector, which is USD 34 billion (46%) and the downstream sector of USD 28 billion (37%). The capex in other sectors was recorded at 2 billion USD, Pertamina Senior Strategic and Investment VP, Daniel Purba in a virtual media briefing for Pertamina Dubai Expo.

Furthermore, Daniel said, large amounts of investment must be made by Pertamina. This is in line with Pertamina’s efforts to oversee the energy transition and decarbonization through its business portfolio.

“Pertamina has targeted to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030,” he said.

Pertamina has designed a number of NRE projects. One of them is the development of geothermal power plants whose capacity is targeted to increase from 672 megawatts (MW) in 2020 to 1,128 MW in 2026. Pertamina is also developing green hydrogen projects from the company’s existing NRE plants and gray hydrogen from existing oil refineries.

On the same occasion, President Director of Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) Ahmad Yuniarto said, Indonesia occupies the second position with the most geothermal power plant installations in the world. the amount of energy covers 2,276 MW with 13 power plants in Indonesia.

“Indonesia occupies the second position with the most number of geothermal power plant installations in the world,” he said, adding that on top of the list is the United States with 3,722 MW. After Indonesia comes the Philippines with 1,918 MW, Turkey with 1,710, and New Zealand with 1,037 MW.

Purba said, total geothermal capacity worldwide in 2021 will be 15,854 MW spread across a number of countries around the world. (Hartatik)
