Jakarta – The Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta is embarking on the electrification of city transportation (angkot), after successfully integrating electric buses and taxis through the trial of Foton eTruckmate electric vehicles.
This step was marked by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PT Indomobil Global Transportasi, PT Green Logistic Solution, and PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta).
“We started this trial as part of a major transformation of Jakarta’s transportation towards a cleaner and more energy-efficient system,” said Daud Joseph, Operations Director of Transjakarta, on Tuesday, 6 May.
Multifunctional electric vehicle for congested cities
The Foton eTruckmate is a lightweight electric vehicle that is flexible for logistics and passenger transport. Despite its compact size, the car offers adequate transport capacity, high performance, and zero-emission operation.
“The Foton eTruckmate is a modern mobility solution. Its compact dimensions make it ideal for Jakarta’s narrow streets. In contrast, its electric drive makes operations more efficient and pollution-free,” explains Edi Napis, Chief Operating Officer of PT Indomobil Global Transportasi.
According to Edi, this vehicle is perfect as the electric angkot of the future, because in addition to being environmentally friendly, its operating costs are lower than those of oil-fuelled vehicles.
The Foton eTruckmate trial will be conducted in various strategic distribution channels in Jakarta. The evaluation will focus on aspects such as energy consumption and mileage per charge, the vehicle’s ability to adjust to urban traffic and road conditions, and its daily operational capacity for carrying passengers.
Ease and efficiency of battery recharging
“The data from this trial will be used as a basis for developing low-emission public transport policies in the future,” said Daud Joseph.
The Jakarta Provincial Government is targeting a significant reduction in carbon emissions in the transport sector as part of its regional climate action plan. The electric angkot trial is the next step in realising this vision.
“We want to create a smart and sustainable transport system. Electric vehicles like eTruckmate are part of the solution, especially if city transport players can widely adopt them,” added Daud.
This step is also expected to inspire other cities in Indonesia to accelerate the adoption of clean energy-based transport, especially in the public transport sector, which has been a major contributor to emissions in urban areas. (Hartatik)
