Jakarta – Indonesia’s youth has responded actively to global climate change at the ongoing United Nations Summit on Climate Change (COP-28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Indonesian Pavilion, supported by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), became the centre of youth participation in discussing this challenge.
The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya, together with a number of young environmental activists, initiated a special session at the Indonesian Pavilion with the theme “Our Dream, Our Action” on Friday, 1 December.
In this session, four youth representatives from various countries, including Gamma Thohir and Zagy Berian from Indonesia, Ali Al-Shemmari, and Lara Rudar from the United Arab Emirates, spoke about their essential role in steering the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources.
Gamma Thohir emphasised that the younger generation can be instrumental in opening up rural communities access to renewable energy. “The youth generation can be very instrumental in opening up access for rural communities to utilise renewable energy,” said Gamma Thohir.
This concrete step was followed up by signing a memorandum of understanding at COP28 between Desa Bumi, represented by Gamma Thohir, and the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE), represented by Zagy Berian.
In her remarks, KLHK Minister Siti Nurbaya highlighted the importance of steps like this as an inspiration for young people worldwide to be actively involved in finding solutions to the challenges of global climate change.
“Steps like this can inspire young people around the world to be actively involved in finding solutions to the challenges of global climate change,” she said in a written statement. (Hartatik)
