IDXCarbon says 1M tons of carbon units sold since inception

Jakarta – The Indonesia Carbon Exchange (IDXCarbon) has recorded one million tons of carbon units sold through the carbon exchange since its inception on September 26, 2023.

Corporate Secretary of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) Kautsar Primadi Nurahmad said the number of IDXCarbon users has also increased to 100 users by the end of 2024, representing more than a two-fold increase compared to the number of users recorded at the end of 2023.

“This indicates that carbon trading is growing in Indonesia, in line with the country’s efforts to support sustainable development and climate change mitigation,” he said.

In addition, three (3) carbon unit projects or Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certificates (SPE-GRK) were listed on IDXCarbon early this year, further increasing the number of new carbon units.

These projects are the New Gas-Fired Power Plant Unit (PLTGU) Priok Block 4, amounting to 763,653 tons CO2 equivalent carbon units (tCO2e); the Conversion of Single Cycle Power Plant to Combined Cycle (Add On) PLTGU Grati Block 2 project, which recorded 407,390 tCO2e.

The third project is the Conversion of a Single-Cycle Power Plant to a Combined Cycle Block 2 PLN NP UP Muara Tawar, managed by PT PLN Nusantara Power, which recorded 30,000 tCO2e.

These projects are traded under the IDTBS classification, a classification for technology-based reduction carbon units from Indonesia.

With the addition of these new projects, IDXCarbon now has six (6) tradable carbon unit projects.

“This positive development at the beginning of 2025 provides great hope for an increase in carbon transaction volumes and the growth of a green economy-based industry that supports energy transition in Indonesia,” Nurahmad said.

Researcher at the Center for International Forestry Research, World Agroforestry (CIFOR_ICRAF), Herry Purnomo, said the absence of carbon units traded on the carbon exchange shows the complexity of calculating the carbon stocks from the sector. The other problems are due to the unclarity of regulations. (Roffie Kurniawan)
