Government predicts 5-fold increase in EV charging stations usage during Eid holidays this year

Jakarta—The government projects a fivefold increase in the use of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) during the Eid al-Fitr 2025 homecoming period. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) ensures infrastructure readiness to support a smooth journey for electric vehicle users.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia in an official statement, Friday, 14 March, said the importance of expanding the reach of SPKLU, especially on strategic routes travelled by travellers. “We have instructed PLN to increase the number of SPKLUs so that travellers do not experience problems running out of power on the way,” Mr Lahadalia said.

To date, 3,558 SPKLUs are spread across Sumatra, Java, and Nusa Tenggara. With the increasing number of electric vehicle users, the government targets providing SPKLUs every 22 kilometres on the main route.

“With increasing public awareness of electric vehicles, we are ensuring adequate availability of SPKLUs on strategic routes. The target is 70,000 charging transactions during mudik, up five times compared to 14,000 transactions last year,” Bahlil added.

In addition, PLN is also preparing 12 mobile SPKLU units stationed at toll exits to help travellers who run out of power on the way. This service can be accessed through the PLN Mobile application or by calling the customer service number at 0877-7111-2123.

Meanwhile, PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo explained that the trip planner feature in the PLN Mobile app has been optimised to help users find the nearest SPKLU location and estimate queue times.

“This feature is designed to avoid long queues and ensure an even distribution of charging,” Darmawan said.

Currently, Java is the region with the largest number of SPKLUs, with 2,480 units, followed by Sumatra with 432 units and Kalimantan with 209 units. The government hopes this step can support the clean energy transition and comfort travellers during the Eid al-Fitr 2025 period. (Hartatik)
