Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) launched the Seagrass Blue Carbon Mitigation Action Profile during the side events of the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum Summit that took place in Bali on Monday, 9 October. The initiative to launch this document is part of the Indonesian government’s strategy to address climate change and increase the utilisation of blue carbon potential.
Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono revealed the importance of Indonesia as the owner of 17 per cent of global blue carbon reserves. “Indonesia has a great opportunity to utilise the blue carbon ecosystem as one of the solutions in addressing climate change,” Trenggono said in a written statement.
The Seagrass Blue Carbon Mitigation Action Profile is expected to guide efforts to conserve and restore blue carbon habitats. Blue carbon ecosystems play a crucial role for coastal communities that can be impacted by climate change-related risks such as extreme weather, storms, erosion, flooding and more.
Minister Trenggono explained that the Seagrass Blue Carbon Mitigation Action Profile will support the improvement of Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target. As part of the Seagrass Blue Carbon Mitigation Action Profile, Indonesia will focus on regulating the use of marine space and restoring seagrass beds. The results are expected to create significant carbon emission reductions by 2030.
KKP is developing an application that will make it easier for the public to get involved in monitoring blue carbon activities in Indonesia and building a Blue Carbon Room as a monitoring centre. “Indonesia has about 11.5 per cent of the total seagrass area in the world. Therefore, the development of blue carbon in Indonesia must consider the importance of seagrass ecosystems as a key part of the blue carbon buffer,” he continued. (Hartatik)
