EMR: Companies must conduct post-mining reclamation in a targeted and sustainable manner

Jakarta – The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) emphasised that Indonesian mining companies must conduct post-mining reclamation and involve themselves in the Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) program. This obligation is based on Law Number 3 of 2020 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining.

Head of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources’ Bureau of Communication, Public Information Services, and Cooperation Agus Cahyono Adi emphasised the urgency of the regulations issued by the government regarding post-mining reclamation management and PPM, given the vital role of post-mining activities in providing welfare and increasing sustainable added value for communities around the mine.

“The regulation aims to ensure that mining companies are obliged to carry out post-mining activities appropriately and sustainably. This is important to improve the community around the mine,” Adi said in an official statement. He added that the government will supervise and impose strict sanctions if companies ignore this regulation.

While recognising the commitment of mining companies in sustainably conducting reclamation and PPM, Adi emphasised the importance of positively impacting the environment and the welfare of local communities.

Rudini Rahim, Corporate Communication Superintendent of PT Berau Coal, confirmed that the role of Good Mining Practices (GMP) is key to the success of a responsible mining industry. “GMP is a commitment and operational standard that covers all aspects of mining activities, ensuring activities are carried out by maximising benefits for the surrounding community and minimising negative impacts on the environment,” he explained.

GMP includes careful planning and design, effective water management, air pollution control, reclamation and rehabilitation, community empowerment and social responsibility. Rahim said that the comprehensive implementation of GMP can leave a positive footprint on the community, preserve the environment, and positively contribute to community welfare. (Hartatik)
