Central Java’s industrial energy transition is slow, with only 4.7% utilising renewable energy

Semarang – Despite great potential and ambitious targets, only 4.7 per cent of industries in Central Java utilise new renewable energy (NRE). This was revealed by the Head of the Central Java Investment and One-Stop Integrated Service Office (DPMPTSP), Sakina Rosellasari, during the Central Java Renewable Energy Investment Forum (CJREIF) in Semarang on Saturday, June 29.

“Of the 605 industries that applied for an electricity supply business license (IUPTL) in Central Java during 2020-2024, only 29 use renewable energy, and even then, only 4.7 per cent,” she said.

This figure is far from the target of 25 per cent of industries in Central Java that are expected to use NRE in 2024. Sakina acknowledged the downward trend of IUPTLS, with 1 permit in 2020, 2 permits in 2021, 10 in 2022, 9 in 2023, and 7 in 2024 until June.

Even so, Sakina is optimistic and encourages industries in Central Java to switch to NRE. She explained that the potential of NRE in Central Java is huge, and global consumers are now increasingly aware of environmental sustainability.

“This is the time for businesses in Central Java to increase the use of NRE through solar panels or steam. The target is 25 per cent, and we are optimistic that it can be achieved,” she said.

Furthermore, Sakina explained that industries utilising NRE are currently dominated by export-oriented labour-intensive industries, such as footwear and textiles. There are also pharmaceutical, energy, and SOE industries, as well as other 100 per cent export-oriented companies.

Sakina hopes that the CJREIF forum will encourage businesses to switch to renewable energy immediately. She emphasised that this initiative is the responsibility of buyers and businesses to care about the environment and create “green investments.”

“Let us together reduce emissions and create an environmentally friendly environment,” he said. (Hartatik)
