Bontang Train F reactivated, ready to process 1,200 mmscfd of gas from Geng North

Jakarta—The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) announced that PT Badak Natural Gas Liquefaction (NGL) will reactivate one of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing facilities at the Bontang Gas Plant, East Kalimantan. The reactivated facility is Train F, which will process gas produced from the Geng North-1 well in the North Ganal Block.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif said that the reactivation of Train F at the Bontang Refinery is a strategic step to absorb 1,200 mmscfd of gas production from the North Ganal Block, which Italian energy company ENI operates.

“Train F at the Bontang Refinery will be reactivated as the facility is still in good condition and ready for use. We have asked to formulate the program and budget required for this reactivation,” Arifin said in an official statement on Thursday, August 15.

According to Arifin, each train at the Bontang Refinery has an average production capacity of 400 mmscfd. With Train F’s re-operation, the gas processing capacity at the Bontang Refinery will increase significantly.

The Bontang Gas Plant has three operating trains, namely Train G and Train H, each with a capacity of 400 mmscfd, while Train E is on standby to receive additional gas supply.

“Currently, there are two trains in operation, and one train, Train E, is ready to be activated if additional gas comes in,” Arifin added.

If all trains at the Bontang Refinery are fully operational, the total gas processing capacity will reach 1,600 mmscfd. However, the utilised production capacity currently only reaches 600 mmscfd of the total available 800 mmscfd capacity.

The Bontang Gas Plant originally had eight trains, from Train A to Train H. Currently, only three trains are active, namely Trains E, G, and H, which receive gas supplies from Cooperation Contractors (K3S) in East Kalimantan.

With the reactivation of Train F, the Bontang Refinery is expected to maximise its gas processing capacity and support the government’s efforts to increase the production and efficiency of liquefied natural gas processing in Indonesia. (Hartatik)
