Balongan refinery produces Diesel X, Pertamina delivers first 52,000 barrels to Freeport Indonesia

Jakarta – PT Pertamina (Persero) through its Refining & Petrochemical Subholding, PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) Balongan Unit produces Diesel X, an ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel that is claimed to be more environmentally friendly. This latest product was shipped in the first shipment of 52 thousand barrels to PT Freeport Indonesia, one of the main consumers in the mining sector.

President Director of Pertamina, Simon Aloysius Mantiri, stated that the presence of Diesel X is the company’s real step in presenting cleaner energy solutions and supporting the national energy self-sufficiency target, which is in line with the Asta Cita, or the eight flagship programs, of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka.

“Diesel X is the answer to the industry’s need for high-quality fuel that not only improves performance but is also more efficient and low in emissions,” Simon said in an official statement Friday, January 31.

Diesel X produced at the Balongan Refinery has a sulfur content below 10 parts per million (ppm), meeting Euro V standards, which makes it more environmentally friendly than conventional diesel fuel. With the latest technology, this product is claimed to increase fuel efficiency by up to 7 per cent, making it ideal for heavy industrial sectors such as mining and heavy equipment.

President Director of PT KPI, Taufik Aditiyawarman, explained that the Balongan Refinery’s success in producing Diesel X results from continuous improvement in production processes and research.

“We make various innovations in the production system to ensure Diesel X has the best quality with international standards. This product is expected to support the needs of industries that increasingly demand high efficiency and cleaner energy,” Taufik said.

Currently, the Diesel X production capacity at the Balongan Refinery reaches 200 thousand barrels per month, and the first shipment to PT Freeport Indonesia is the first step in the market penetration of this fuel to the country’s large industrial sector.

According to Pertamina’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Diesel X is part of Pertamina’s efforts to realise national energy independence while supporting the energy transition towards more environmentally friendly fuels.

“This product is the result of Pertamina Group’s collaboration, starting from research by Pertamina Research, Technology and Innovation, the production process at Pertamina International Refinery, to distribution through Pertamina Patra Niaga,” Fadjar explained. (Hartatik)
