Jakarta – The ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN BAC) and the Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on concrete measures for industrial decarbonisation.
The MoU was signed by Chairman of ASEAN BAC and Chairman of Kadin Indonesia, Arsjad Rasjid and Chairman of Jetro, Ishiguro Norihiko during the opening ceremony of ASEAN Japan Business Week 2023 (AJBW 2023) in Tokyo, Japan, 5 June 2023.
The person in charge of the ASEAN Net Zero Hub, Muhammad Yusrizki, said the MoU was an effort to accelerate the transition process of companies in ASEAN to assist their Japanese counterparts in achieving their climate change action targets.
The collaboration includes assisting companies to create credible transition plans and introducing low-carbon technologies such as energy efficiency and renewable energy. In addition, the two institutions also agreed to develop research and network development and business matching between Japanese companies and companies from each ASEAN country.
In the spirit of the theme “ASEAN Matters: Epicentre of Growth”, Yusrizki said, the MoU is expected to be followed by other ASEAN partner countries, such as the European Union, the United States, the United Kingdom and China.
He said many countries and economic regions in the world have already moved in that direction, citing European Union’s trade policy called the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), which will significantly impact the ASEAN region’s exports to the European Union. (Hartatik)
