Analysts: Climate change mitigation efforts are serious enough

Jakarta – Indonesia is committed to reducing the global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius in 2030, however analysts said in an online discussion, Tuesday (6/4) that they believe efforts to mitigate climate change do not appear to be serious.

Daniel Murdiyarso, Professor of Geophysics and Meteorology, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) said in the webinar ‘Climate Crisis, Misinformation and Roles Media’ organized by AJI Indonesia in collaboration with Google News Initiative (GNI), that the government should seriously address greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector by intensifying the use of new and renewable energy (NRE).

He said that “in Indonesia, we often hear about the destruction of forests, and the response is quite good, but not in the energy sector.”
Murdiyarso continued, currently the use of new and renewable energy, such as solar panels, still needs to be massively increased to meet the community for electricity consumption needs, so we can phase down the needs of coal-fuelled power plants.

Through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), Indonesia is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent, on its own or 41 percent with international assistance by 2030 from business-as-usual conditions.

The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will mainly be driven in the agriculture, forest, and land use and energy sectors. The implementation of low-carbon development is also expected to continue to reduce emissions by 34 percent to 41 percent in 2045 through the development of renewable energy, forest and peatland protection, increasing land productivity, and integrated waste management.
