Jakarta — Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have signed an implementing arrangement to strengthen cooperation on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), marking a follow-up to a 2024 memorandum of understanding on environment and forestry, the ministry said on Wednesday, May 20.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of Ecosperity Week in Singapore by Ristianto Pribadi, head of the ministry’s Bureau of Public Relations and Foreign Cooperation, and Martin Krause, director of UNEP’s Climate Change Division.
Both parties said the deal reflects a shared commitment to advancing REDD+ implementation. The partnership will focus on technical support to mobilise results-based financing, strengthen carbon market readiness, including implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and expand social forestry and community-based enterprises.
Additional areas of cooperation include enhancing the forestry sector’s contribution to emissions reduction and strengthening safeguards and knowledge-based implementation at national and subnational levels.
UNEP noted that forests offer multiple benefits, from carbon storage and biodiversity protection to supporting communities and resilience. The ministry said the collaboration aligns with Indonesia’s targets under its FOLU Net Sink 2030 agenda and Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), and is expected to support high-integrity climate action and sustainable forest governance.
