Jakarta — President Joko Widodo spearheaded the Joint Tree Planting Movement to combat climate change at the JIEP Urban Forest in Pulogadung Industrial Estate, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 29 November.
Addressing the gathering, President Jokowi emphasised the urgency of taking tangible steps to counter the adverse effects of climate change, global warming, and pollution. “This is to anticipate climate change, anticipate global warming that we have felt together and real, also to overcome pollution in Jabodetabek,” the President stated after planting a Pulai tree on the sidelines of the event, as reported on the official website of the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
The Joint Tree Planting Movement garnered participation from various sectors, from government officials to private companies, drawing praise from President Jokowi. “I thank you for the activity this morning – tree planting, and I also see the trees are big; there are pulai trees, trembesi, sawo kecik, bungur, I think all types of plants are planted together,” he remarked, adding that such tree-planting initiatives would extend nationwide.
While encouraging continued collaborative efforts, President Jokowi urged vigilance in the face of potential disasters during the rainy season, calling for a collective effort to mitigate risks. He also invited all community members to participate actively in tree planting within their respective neighbourhoods.
Accompanying President Jokowi in the endeavour were notable figures, including Minister of Agriculture Amran Sulaiman, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, and Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono. (nsh)
