PLN secures EUR 6.5 million grant to strengthen renewable energy generation and transmission

Jakarta—PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has received a EUR 6.5 million grant from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the European Union. In a press release on Tuesday, February 11, PLN Finance Director Sinthya Roesly explained that the grant will provide technical assistance, capacity-building training, and support for developing clean energy generation infrastructure.

According to her, these funds will be used to develop renewable power plants and improve transmission networks, supporting Indonesia’s decarbonisation and energy self-sufficiency targets.

“This 6.5 million Euro grant will strengthen our efforts in developing solar, wind, and other renewable technology projects, as well as supporting the strengthening of the transmission network, which is vital for the efficient distribution of clean energy,” Sinthya said.

These funds will be used by two key sectors. The first is the development of renewable energy generation, which includes installing and operating facilities capable of producing low-emission electricity. Second, the transmission infrastructure must be improved to ensure the renewable electricity supply can be optimally distributed throughout Indonesia.

“We plan to utilise this grant for technical assistance for renewable energy projects and capacity building so that our institutions are better prepared to support the decarbonisation agenda and achieve the 2060 net-zero emissions target,” she added.

The initiative is an integral part of a broader program within the Indonesia Energy Transition Facility (IETF) framework, designed to accelerate the transition from fossil to clean energy through funding collaboration and technological innovation. Sinthya emphasised that this move brings environmental benefits and opens up new investment and employment opportunities in the green energy sector.

“The support from AFD and the EU is a strong signal that the international community supports our efforts to build a more sustainable energy future. This is an important momentum that we must utilise as optimally as possible to strengthen renewable energy infrastructure in Indonesia,” Sinthya explained.

Although the technical details of the use of the grant are still being finalised, PLN is optimistic that the funds will be a catalyst in encouraging the accelerated development of renewable power plants and a more reliable transmission network.

“This approach will help create a multiplier effect, which not only reduces carbon emissions but also boosts economic growth through increased efficiency and competitiveness of the energy sector,” Sinthya added. (Hartatik)
