Jakarta – The Indonesian and British governments have agreed to extend the low-carbon energy transition cooperation programme until 2027. The agreement was marked by the launch of the Mentari programme during a bilateral meeting represented by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif and UK Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero Graham Stuart at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Office on Friday, July 4.
In a written statement, Tasrif said the UK Government is committed to increasing its support in achieving Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) target. “Initially, the Mentari programme was scheduled to end in 2024, but now it has been extended to 2027,” he said.
The UK is also committed to providing an additional GBP 6.5 million to maintain and improve the programme’s initiatives. Mentari has been a key partner working with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to improve renewable energy planning and procurement, both for on-grid and off-grid applications, promoting policies, recommendations and technical studies.
Tasrif said the UK also actively supports Indonesia through various programmes, including the Just Energy Transitions Partnership (JETP) and the Joint Economic And Trade Committee (JETCO). He said Indonesia invites more international partners to support a rapid and effective transition towards Indonesia’s clean energy targets. Indonesia needs to invest up to USD 1 trillion by 2060 for renewable energy generation and transmission.
UK Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero Graham Stuart said that Indonesia could lead in Indonesia’s clean energy transition. With the help of UK expertise and investment, Indonesia is accelerating the transition from coal to clean energy.
The Mentari Programme will be implemented in 2020-2024. It is a follow-up to the MoU between MEMR and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Low Carbon Energy Development (LCEP) Cooperation. The implementation time of the programme has been increased for an additional three years, to end in 2027. (Hartatik)
