Jakarta – The Indonesian government has set a target of utilizing renewable energy (NRE), projected to reach 70 per cent by 2060. The National Energy Council (DEN) said the remaining 30 per cent of energy needs will still be met from fossil energy sources.
DEN Secretary General Djoko Siswanto said in an interactive dialog on Tuesday, June 11, that while Indonesia will focus on renewable energy, reliance on coal remains significant with domestic use currently reaching 60 per cent.
In addition, Indonesia has sizable coal reserves and has discovered new natural gas sources, indicating the need to improve gas infrastructure to support the energy transition towards net zero emissions. Siswanto said that gas is still a choice in this transition.
He underlined the country’s dependence on crude oil imports to meet national needs. “Our domestic refinery capacity can currently process 1 million barrels of crude oil daily,” said Siswanto. (Hartatik)
