AIIB to open Indonesia office following USD17bn financing deal focused on green growth

Jakarta — The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is set to establish its first representative office in Indonesia after securing a massive USD17 billion project financing commitment with the Indonesian government. Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa told the press on Friday, June 26, that the government will provide unused state land and buildings to support the multilateral bank’s physical presence in the country.

The funding, which was finalised during the Minister’s working visit to China in mid-June 2026, is structured as a dedicated project financing facility rather than a conventional state debt instrument. Designed to be utilised in stages through 2029, the capital carries lower interest rates than regular commercial investments, while ensuring the resulting infrastructure assets remain state property. The physical office is expected to streamline communication and accelerate project approval pipelines for these multi-billion-dollar developments.

This expansion aligns with the AIIB’s broader strategic push for bold investment in green infrastructure and regional connectivity. The bank has emphasised that Asia must accelerate its transition to renewable energy and digital networks to withstand climate risks and economic uncertainty. To date, the AIIB has already financed approximately USD2 billion in renewable energy and battery energy storage systems (BESS) across South and Southeast Asia.

Beyond traditional transport, the bank is prioritising “next-generation connectivity,” such as the ASEAN Power Grid and submarine cable networks. By establishing a local base, the AIIB aims to better support Indonesia in scaling “sunrise industries” like clean energy, which the bank views as a critical solution to the mounting impacts of climate change.
