Citicore, Pertamina inaugurate the Philippines’ first hybrid solar plant with 24-hour supply

Jakarta – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) affiliate Citicore Renewable Energy Corporation (CREC) is operating the first hybrid solar power plant in Batangas Province, Philippines, according to a statement from Pertamina on Thursday, September 18.

The hybrid power plant, which marks a new milestone in the country’s energy transition, is capable of supplying clean electricity continuously for 24 hours. The 97-megawatt peak (MWp) facility, supported by a 320-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), was officially inaugurated by Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. on Monday, September 15.

Pertamina NRE CEO John Anis called this achievement an important milestone for both countries. “The operation of the 197 MWp solar power plant with a 320 MWh battery energy storage system is a strategic milestone, not only for the Philippines but also for Pertamina NRE. We are proud that this project strengthens Pertamina’s renewable energy portfolio, while also marking the beginning of CREC’s ambitious target to increase capacity by 1 gigawatt per year over the next five years,” he said.

President Marcos Jr. expressed his appreciation and hoped that this project would become a model for sustainable clean energy development in the Philippines. He emphasised the importance of a sustainable energy supply to support national economic growth.

Supporting energy transition, emission reduction

The solar power plant built by CREC is divided into two locations, namely Lumbangan (125 MWp) and Luntal (72 MWp). With the support of BESS, this project has become the first baseload solar power plant in the Philippines, meaning that it is capable of providing a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply.

In addition to supporting the energy transition, CREC’s business performance also showed a positive trend. In the first half of 2025, the company recorded revenues of PHP 2.66 billion (USD 134 million), with net profit increasing 38 per cent to PHP 630 million (USD 32 million). CREC’s shares have also jumped 32 per cent since the beginning of the year.

The environmental impact of the Batangas solar power plant is also significant. The project is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by up to 265,933 tons of CO₂e per year, equivalent to planting more than 12 million trees. The facility is also capable of supplying clean electricity to 158,300 households, strengthening energy security and community welfare.

Pertamina Vice President of Corporate Communication Fadjar Djoko Santoso said the company is committed to promoting clean energy transition at the regional level.

“Pertamina, as the leader of energy transition in Indonesia, hopes to take an active role in the development of renewable energy in Southeast Asia. This is in line with our focus on green energy and the achievement of the Net Zero Emission 2060 target,” he said.

Pertamina emphasises that all of these strategic measures not only contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), but also strengthen the implementation of Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) principles across all lines of business. (Hartatik)
