Jakarta—According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), 33 provinces in Indonesia have expressed a commitment to shifting from fossil energy to renewable energy by passing the Regional Energy General Plan (RUED) into a Regional Regulation (Perda) on Monday, December 2.
“Out of a total of 37 provinces, 33 of them already have RUED regulations. Papua will soon discuss the RUED regulation draft with the DPRD. At the same time, Southwest Papua and three new provinces-Mountainous Papua, Central Papua, and South Papua-are still in the drafting stage,” Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said after a meeting with Commission VII of the House of Representatives.
Bahlil, also the Daily Chairman of the National Energy Council (DEN), explained that the central government is ready to provide support to accelerate the completion of the document. “The central government will continue to support. We have prepared a special team that will work closely with local governments through focused discussions and direct technical assistance,” Bahlil explained.
The RUED is a strategic document that translates the National Energy General Plan (RUEN) targets to the provincial level. Provinces finalising RUED regulations include key regions such as West Java, East Java, Central Java, North Sumatra and Aceh. The ratification process involves drafting, cross-sectoral discussions and assigning a regional regulation register number.
“The successful preparation of the RUED is important for the province concerned and sustainable national energy development. With this document, the regions have a clear roadmap for their energy management,” Bahlil said.
This integration step is expected to accelerate the adoption of new renewable energy in various regions, reduce dependence on fossil energy, and support the net-zero emissions target by 2060. Full support from the central and local governments is key so the energy transition can go according to plan without leaving the affected parties behind. (Hartatik)
