Jakarta—Renewable energy company PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGEO) targets a geothermal installed capacity of 1.5 gigawatts (GW) by 2030. Pertamina Geothermal’s management said the target will be achieved by implementing more efficient and innovative geothermal development.
Several approaches will be taken to support the achievement of these targets. These include phased development to minimise risks, new technologies to increase efficiency, collaboration to increase volume and market consolidation, and the development of new green businesses, such as green hydrogen and ammonia.
“As well as promoting technology localisation by encouraging local manufacturing of the main components of geothermal plants,” said Pertamina Geothermal Energy President Director Julfi Hadi in an official statement Thursday, November 14. Julfi added that the acceleration of geothermal development will make Indonesia a potential world green energy giant.
This aligns with the national New and Renewable Energy (NRE) roadmap, which targets 10.5 GW of geothermal installed capacity by 2035. “This target is expected to attract investment of USD17-18 billion, contribute up to USD22 billion to GDP, and create up to 1 million jobs,” Julfi said.
He said the transition to green energy is an urgent need, especially for Indonesia as an archipelago highly vulnerable to climate change’s impacts. Moreover, Indonesia has tremendous renewable energy potential, especially geothermal energy, which is most suitable for replacing the role of fossil energy. (hs)
